Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) (click link for product specifications) are suitable where manned entry is permitted. The operator controls steering and the spoil removal process while monitoring the soil conditions and line and grade. Hydraulic motors rotate the inner drum and cutter face to excavate soil. The steering joint allows the TBM to be articulated and hydraulically steered in any direction. The TBM torque wings provide an anti-roll function. The unit is equipped with a methane gas detection. Series I TBMs can be equipped with three types of cutter heads (dirt for clay, silt and sand; carbide for soft to medium rock; sand shelves for loose and unstable soil) and be interchanged–even underground. An optional closed face cutter head attachment can be used for boring in unstable ground conditions and features hydraulically operated doors to prevent subsidence while excavating.
TBMs come standard with three cutter heads: sand shelves, single dirt and quad carbide bar.
