Tunneling Boring Machine (TBM)

Akkerman’s manned Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) are the epitome of pipejacking power, control and accuracy in an array of soil conditions. TBMs are suitable where manned entry is permissible. Akkerman TBMs can be used with any jacking pipe up to 14-feet (4.3 m) in diameter and a multitude of drive lengths. Designed for unequaled ease of set-up, the Akkerman system can typically be set up and ready to launch in one day.

Akkerman offers various types of TBMs that range in size from 44” – 168” O.D.The dirt cutter head, carbide cutter head and sand shelves come standard with each TBM purchase. Exclusive to Akkerman, these three cutter head configurations can be changed underground. A closed face attachment is available for boring in unstable ground conditions.

P400 and P600 Power Packs

The P600 is a remote pendant controlled, electric power pack to be used with TBM and jacking frame arrangements. The P600 features a 600-gallon (2270 L) hydraulic reservoir with three interchangeable pump/motor modules which are manufactured in job specific low and high pressure configurations.

Conveyors
Belt and screw conveyors transport spoils from the TBM face to the haul bucket for removal on the haul cart. Conveyors are offered in several sizes to maximize the performance for each size boring head. A belt conveyor performs best in the majority of soil conditions. A screw conveyor performs best in sticky or sloppy ground conditions.

524 and 1548 Haul Units

The battery powered 524 and 1548 haul systems, comprised of a haul unit, track and dirt bucket, transports spoils deposited into the dirt bucket from the TBM conveyor. Haul unit tracks are standard sized in 8-foot (2.4 m) sections and bolt together with ease.

Intermediate Jacking Station (IJS)
To maximize drive length capability, the IJS bears the load by distributing thrust effectively and economically—even in challenging ground conditions. IJSs are manufactured in numerous designs to suit project, size, joint of the pipe, budget, and length of drive. Oil is distributed to the IJS through a set of lines connected to the pump unit.

Bentonite Pumps

EH 2250 Bentonite Pumps

The electric EH2250 Bentonite Pump provides lubricant to the outside of the pipe, thus reducing friction between the pipe and ground and decreasing the pipejacking thrust. The dual, 250-gallon (946 L) tanks continuously mix and pump bentonite solution with individual propellers at a high volume psi.
