Akkerman carries a comprehensive inventory of used equipment and accessories from our rental and lease fleet. All tunneling equipment and accessories are no more than two-years-old and have been thoroughly serviced. In fact, Akkerman has so much confidence in the integrity of its used equipment that it comes with the same warranty as our new equipment. See the categories to the below to view our current inventory of equipment and accessories.

Conventional Pipejacking “Manned Entry”
Pipejacking Systems are used to install underground pipelines of approximately 44” or larger within strict alignment and grade tolerances where personnel-entry (i.e. operator located inside the boring machine and/or on the haul cart) is permissible.

Belt Conveyors
Belt conveyors transport spoils from the TBM face to the haul bucket for removal on the haul care. Conveyors are offered in several sizes to maximize the performance for each size boring head. A screw conveyor performs better in certain sticky or sloppy ground conditions.

Boring Heads
Akkerman offers various types of boring heads to complement out TBM systems. These range in size from 44” – 168” O.D. Wheel machines and excavators style TBMs are available based on size and ground conditions.

Closed Face Attachments
Closed face cutters attach to the boring head and are used in wet, unstable ground conditions. Hydralically operated doors prevent subsidence while excavating the ground. The closed face attachments are available on our wheel machines from 44” – 114” O.D.

Telescopic Cylinder Jacking System
The multi-cylinder jacking system is practical for pipe 42" O.D. or larger; its biggest advantage is the ability to increase jacking thrust for larger pipe. The number of cylinders and total thrust in the system is determined by project requirements, contractor preferences and the safe load capacity of the jacking pipe.

Microtunneling
Microtunneling is generally defined as remotely controlled pipejacking (personnel-entry is not required) whereby the soils at the cutter face are controlled to maintain balance. Muck removal is conducted through slurry transport via variable frequency controlled centrifugal pumps.

Control Containers
Akkerman has the most advanced Information and Control System available. The major components that are housed in the control containers are the control console, power distribution, transformer and hydraulic power pack. All system controls are located for easy access by the operator. Standard control container features include: climate controlled operator area, planned access and connection area for all control cables, hydraulic hoses (universal to all Akkerman MTBM sizes), and separate operator/mechanical areas. All components meet National Electrical Codes (NEC).

MTBMs Heads (MTBM 24, 30, 26, 44, 46, 52.5, 60, 72, 74 O.D.)
The microtunneling boring heads (MTBM) pilot the course and excavate the ground. They have many features specially designed to achieve high performance in soil conditions ranging from flowing unstable ground to hard rock. Simultaneously, slurry is pumped to the MTBM, mixed with the spoils and pumped to the surface for separation. Akkerman MTBMs have a pressure balanced cutting chamber and slurry spoil removal to provide maximum control of the soil at the cutter face. They are electrically powered to give optimum efficiency and cutting torque, especially on long drives. MTBMs are available in sizes 24-102” O.D. with the addition of an increase kit.

Bentonite Pumps
Pumping bentonite lubricant around the outside of the pipes has proven to be very effective in reducing the friction between the jacking pipe and the soil that surrounds it. In almost every case, bentonite results in a significant decrease in thrust.
