TBM Cutter Head Attachments

Akkerman TBM cutter heads complement a full range of ground conditions. Cutter face tooling comprises robust and durable carbide gage cutter bits, clay spades, and disc cutters.

Carbide single and quad bar cutter heads feature rotating cutter arms for use in dry, dewater ground. A closed‐face cutter head is used in unstable ground to prevent subsidence into the TBM’s interior. Mixed‐ground disc cutter heads are used for high compressive strength geology, feature full‐face support, and heavy duty tooling options.

Project‐specific, custom cutter heads are available at request.

FEATURES:

  • Carbide single‑bar cutter head with spade tooling for dry, dewatered ground.
  • Carbide quad‑bar cutter head with high‑capacity bullet‑bit tooling for stiff, dry, and dewatered ground.
  • Closed‑face cutter head with hydraulic door to prevent subsidence, using bullet‑bit and spade tooling for unstable ground.
  • Mixed‑ground disc cutter head with high‑capacity carbide scrapers and disc cutters for high‑strength geology.

Testimonials

Capitol Tunneling was awarded a Sub-Contract from E.S. Wagner on ODOT Project 277 (18) in Toledo Ohio in 2018 and patterning with Team Akkerman was vital to the project’s success. The installation consisted of 2600 feet of 66″ casing utilizing the Akkerman 540 series 2 TBM, the 5200 Pipe Jacking unit, and a wide range of support equipment. Not only did the equipment outperform our expectations, the technical support went above and beyond from the start. From onsite training at Akkerman’s facilities in Minnesota, to the project site training by expert field technicians, they provided support and expertise from set up to completion. Thank You Team Akkerman for making our project a success and for thoroughly educating our team members while providing world class equipment. Your commitment to excellence allowed us to complete the project the way Capitol Tunneling Inc. expects all project to be completed…On Line…On Grade…and On time
